Job Description:

With 58 Depots nationwide, GAP Group Limited is the UK's leading independent Plant and Tool Hire Company. The Group is in a period of growth and now has over 850 staff UK wide.

At GAP we take very seriously the need to train young people to ensure the future prosperity of our industry. We currently employ a number of Apprentice Plant Mechanics at our 58 depots around the country.

An apprenticeship with GAP allows individuals to learn, work, earn and get qualified all at the same time.

You must be 16 or over to start an apprenticeship and your local CITB office can help you get things started by putting you through an initial Construction Skills Learning Exercise.

Paid a salary by GAP you will ‘earn as you learn'.

Our training programme includes time at college on a 'block release' basis of modules lasting up to ten weeks at a time over a two year period,  as well as periods based in the depot working with our fully qualified Plant Mechanics.  Apprentices who do not stay within travelling distance of the selected college will be required to stay overnight/live away in fully paid accommodation for the duration of the course. In total, it takes four years to successfully complete a GAP Apprenticeship. and this will lead to the award of NVQ/SVQ Level 2/3 in Construction Plant Maintenance

All training and related expenses are covered by GAP and the CITB and include college course fees and accommodation. Travel expenses will also be reimbursed with the exception of the first £10 every week. First year apprentices will be paid a salary ranging from £6573(for under 18's who will do a maximum of 39 hours per week) to £8500. This can increase to a maximum of £17500 during the course of your 4 year apprenticeship for a 42.5 hour week (full time hours).

Plant Mechanics in a GAP depot work Mon - Fri, 0730/0800 -16300/1700 and every 2nd Sat from 0800 - 1200(paid as overtime).  Within GAP, our apprentices will go on to become fully qualified Plant mechanics and have in the past progressed to the posts of Foreman/ Workshop Manager or General Manager of a depot.

We are currently seeking keen and enthusiastic, individuals with a logical and practical approach. Applicants will have, or be working towards, GCSE Grades C/D or SCE Standard Grades 3 / 4 (or equivalent) in Maths, English and a Technical subject. (This is a guide only and we will consider applicants who do not have these qualifications providing they pass the CITB skills test).

If you would be interested in undertaking an Apprenticeship through the CITB Plant Maintenance Scheme please contact Fiona, or Catherine on 0141 225 4629/4613 for an application form or visit our website www.gap-group.co.uk to download one.

In order to qualify for an Apprenticeship you must first register with CITB

construction skills at  www.bconstructive.co.uk/apprenticeships.  Please note, when applying you should choose the ‘Plant Maintenance' apprenticeship.

Once they have received this application you will receive some sample questions for you to complete. When you are comfortable with the sorts of questions you will be asked, you should let Construction skills know that you want to sit a Skills Learning Exercise with them. When you have passed the Skills Learning Exercise, please let us know and we can consider your application.
